MP4 is a container, and the video inside it is already compressed. Renaming the file, or wrapping the same video data in a new MP4, does not make it smaller. The size drops when the picture is encoded again at a lower bitrate, or at a lower resolution.
Phone cameras are the usual case. A one-minute 4K or high-bitrate 1080p clip can be tens or hundreds of megabytes, and it is still a normal MP4.
The free web converter accepts files up to 200MB.
Why the MP4 is large
- Bitrate. A phone may record at 20–50 Mbps. Sharing rarely needs that.
- Resolution. 4K has four times the pixels of 1080p. Those extra pixels cost bitrate.
- Frame rate. 60fps stores more pictures per second than 30fps. Leave the frame rate alone unless the clip is 60fps and you only need smooth-enough playback.
- Length. The same bitrate over more minutes is a bigger file.
HEVC inside an MP4 is already efficient. Turning that into H.264 can make the file larger if you keep the same resolution and a high bitrate. For a smaller file that plays everywhere, use H.264 and a bitrate from the list below. Use HEVC in the codec menu only when you know the player supports it and you want the smaller encode.
Settings for a smaller MP4
Set the target format to MP4 and the codec to H.264(AVC). Then set a video bitrate:
- Keep 1080p and try 4000k or 6000k when the source is a large 1080p or 4K file and you still want a sharp picture.
- Move to 1280x720 and 2000k or 4000k when 1080p at those bitrates is still too big.
- Move to 640x480 and 768k or 1024k only when the file has to be small and a soft picture is acceptable.
Set Scale mode to Fit (keep aspect) whenever you change resolution. Set Audio bitrate to 128k for voice or 192k for music.
Check the downloaded size. If it is still too big, take one bitrate step down, or one resolution step down, and export again from the original MP4.
Compress an MP4 on Ahelpers
- Open the MP4 converter.
- Select the MP4. The free web limit is 200MB.
- Keep Target format on MP4.
- Set Video options to Customize parameters.
- Set Video codec to H.264(AVC).
- Set Resolution only if you decided to drop it. Pair that with Fit (keep aspect).
- Set Video bitrate to the value you picked above.
- Set Audio bitrate.
- Choose Start conversion, download, and play the file. Confirm the picture, the sound, and the size.
Auto on bitrate and resolution keeps a compatible MP4 near the encoder default. Pick a number when the goal is a smaller file.

FAQ
Will converting MP4 to MP4 lose quality?
Yes, some detail goes away, because the pictures are encoded again. A single step down from a high phone bitrate usually still looks fine on a phone screen. Repeating the compress on the new file makes it worse. Always start from the original.
My MP4 is already H.264. Can it still shrink?
Yes, when the current bitrate or resolution is higher than you need. A 1080p file at a very high bitrate often drops a lot at 4000k–6000k with the resolution left at 1080p.
What if the upload is rejected?
Files over 200MB cannot use the free web converter. Export a lower-bitrate or shorter version from the original editor until it is under 200MB, then run the steps above.
